Unfortunately, a lot of people believe that Ramadan is only month of fasting. However, the real goal for us during this Holy month is improvement of our connection to Allah.
How can we be closer to Allah?
“The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion…” (Quran, 2:185)
This ayah is the answer! To improve of our connection to Allah we have to turn to the Quran.
As you can find from the ayah, when Allah mentioned Ramadan He didn’t talk about fasting first. On the contrary, Allah connected the Holy month initially with the Quran. As the main role of Ramadan in our lives is to increase our relationship with the Quran and only then we should follow the command to fast in the month. The goal of fasting is taqwa, but what allows us to establish taqwa in our lives if not the Quran? And fasting allows us to empty our hearts from desires and aspires towards a loftier goal which can only be achieved with the Quran.
Tips to increase the relationship with the Quran:
- Take your Quran out today, if you haven’t already. Tune out all the distractions, and spend some time studying and reading the Quran.
- Make a goal to study, understand and memorize a surah in the Quran this Ramadan, pick a short surah, if you are doing this for the first time.
- Perform the taraweeh prayers, where the Quran is recited.
- If you are unable to attend nightly taraweeh communal prayers, then attempt to do the taraweeh prayers by yourself at home.
The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: “…the Quran is either an argument for you or against you.” (Muslim)
It means that you will benefit from it if you recite it and act by it, otherwise it will be an argument against you. On the Day of Judgement, the Quran will be a proof or a testament against those who disobeyed Allah and did not follow the path He outlined in His Holy Book.
